Affordable Healing Arts by Debra Howard

11/17/2011

When I met Sallie Ann Glassman, neither knew what would eventually come of that meeting… we had a nice, long chat about the healing center vision and mission, including the fact that the healing arts center needed a leader and didn’t I want to do that???

I have been in the Asian Bodywork Therapy profession for nearly 20 years and have actively participated in the growth and development of that profession in the US. I am an author, practitioner, instructor, and promoter who likes to live & work with a good sense of humor and a wide perspective. I am a licensed massage therapist, an AOBTA®-Certified Instructor, and a Diplomate in Asian Bodywork Therapy (NCCAOM).After three years and lots of changes, challenges, and miracles, AHA!  is open!

AHA! is located inside the New Orleans Healing Center (NOHC), located at 2372 St. Claude Ave., at St. Roch. The NOHC is a new concept in community centers, and is breaking ground with a commitment to sustainability while providing needed services and programs to the community.

AHA!  has nearly 3000 sq. ft. in the 53,000 sq. ft. building; a brand new, yet funky and comfy, 11-therapod (room) healing arts center. Our space is on the ‘second floor upper’ (2U in the elevator) above the main entrance on St. Claude Ave.

Intended to be a collaborative project, the ideas that drive AHA!  include to:

  1. Empower qualified, professional, independent practitioners of a wide variety of healing arts by offering affordable therapods (rooms);
  2. Rent affordable, beautiful, comfortable, safe therapods to qualified practitioners of a wide variety of complementary, integrative, alternative, and indigenous healing arts;
  3. Have qualified, professional practitioners offer affordable, safe, effective healing arts sessions to the public;
  4. Be open at least 12 hours per day or more, 7 days per week, to allow for easier access to healing arts for everyone;
  5. Offer easy practitioner scheduling and a unique approach to shared space;
  6. Provide a breeding ground for healers to support, promote, and educate each other;
  7. Offer the maximum healing to our community that we can;
  8. Collect information for evidence-based research on healing arts;
  9. Collaborate with others who enjoy this kind of thing; and
  10. Have as much fun with it all as possible!!

The business plan is designed to offer opportunity and support to independent practitioners to realize their dream of having an affordable private practice, while providing the community members access to a wide variety of healing arts.
