ASI is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative. From its inception in 1961, ASI Federal Credit Union’s mission has been to serve the underserved, promote economic empowerment, and provide financial products and services to people with little or no credit at affordable rates. With humble beginnings on the grounds of a shipyard, where it was founded to serve blue-collar workers, ASI was chartered on the premise that access to affordable credit is the single most important factor in promoting economic mobility. This mission continues to be the driving force behind the credit union today. After half a century of service, ASI has grown to serve 80,000 members at 14 branches across Southeast Louisiana, including one dedicated to Spanish-speaking members and one dedicated to Vietnamese-speaking members. ASI’s emphasis on economic inclusion embraces cultural and financial diversity within its membership. Over half of ASI’s membership is comprised of African American, Latino and Vietnamese borrowers and over sixty percent of the total membership lives at or below the federal poverty level.
Remaining true to its mission, ASI concentrates efforts in communities plagued by entrenched poverty, building branches and supporting commercial investment in areas left behind by most banks and credit unions. Financial education is the overarching focus of our credit union and its nonprofit affiliate and we work with clients of all ages and backgrounds to ensure their long-term financial security. We develop partnerships with area high schools to offer college savings accounts to first-generation college bound students; and counsel adults on issues including credit improvement, debt management, budgeting and saving. We offer many non-credit based loans, including low-cost alternatives to predatory payday lending. ASI offers a myriad of products, including business loans, mortgage loans, auto loans, checking accounts, savings accounts, retirement products and many products to help members establish or rebuild credit.
