What’s New Orleans without Vodou (Voodoo) or a Vodou shop?
But Island of Salvation Botanica isn’t just another New Orleans Vodou shop. It’s The New Orleans Vodou shop. More specifically, it is not a gift shop that caters to tourists. Rather, it is a real Vodou shop that caters to locals who rely on it for their religious supplies.
It is authentic and serious in every way.
Not surprisingly, Island of Salvation Botanica was awarded the “Best of City” award by National Geographic Traveler in 2004.
A visit to this unique store will educate and enlighten you not only in the deeply spiritual aspects of the Vodou religion, but also in the rich blend of cultures and spiritual traditions that defines New Orleans.
The Shop’s owner, Sallie Ann Glassman, is a Haitian-initiated Vodou priestess, who is also internationally recognized for her lectures, art, readings, and healing ceremonies.
Visitors to Island of Salvation Botanica may want to commission a visionary painting from Sallie Ann, or perhaps have a custom gris-gris bag (a magic power talisman) made. The truly intrepid and sincerely interested may also arrange to attend a Saturday night Vodou ceremony in Sallie Ann’s Vodou temple, Achade Meadows. The ceremony is performed by Sallie Ann and an ensemble of initiated drummers, singers, and dancers who are not performers, but actual Vodou practitioners.
